Tooling is a special challenge in pipe making because, as Paul Bonaquisti said in a P&T article, "There is no pipe making section on isle 12 at Kmart." Fortunately, however, Kmart and other such stores do have tools that are useful to pipe makers, they are just not advertised as such.

To begin in a very simplistic manner, there are two main tools one needs to make a pipe. Something to make holes with, and something to shape with. Within those two categories are a variety of tools and methods. I'll begin be listing my choices for those functions, and explain why I made those choices. Certainly my way is not the only way, and is not the best way for everyone, but I do not regret the route I have taken with my tool purchases.
